Choosing a solar pool cover isn’t just about thickness — colour matters too. We now offer our UV600 Micron bubble cover in black, alongside our standard blue range, and the two perform quite differently in terms of heating and protecting your pool.

What is the difference between a blue and a Blue vs Black Solar Pool Cover?
Blue Solar Pool Cover:
- Reflects some sunlight while still absorbing enough to noticeably raise water temperature.
- Offers a good balance between heat gain and protection of your pool chemicals from UV degradation.
- Our most popular option — proven, reliable, and suited to most Cape Town pools.
- Available in 500 or 600 Micron, in widths from 2m up to 7m.
Black Solar Pool Cover:
- Its main benefit is algae control — the darker surface blocks the light wavelengths algae need for photosynthesis, making it much harder for algae to survive.
- This can meaningfully cut chemical and filtration costs, with comparable dark covers reducing chemical use by up to 60% and filtration/pump time by up to 50%.
- Still delivers strong heat gain — only marginally less than blue, since the cover absorbs sunlight and transfers that warmth to the water.
- 600 Micron thickness, 12mm bubble diameter, 3.5mm bubble height.
- Many clients also simply prefer the sleek, modern look of a black blanket cover on their pool.
- A newer addition to our range, available in 3m, 4m or 5m widths.
Which one should you choose?
If algae and chemical costs are your main concern, black bubble pool cover is the smarter choice — and you’ll still get solid heat gain. If maximum warmth is your priority, blue remains a great all-rounder with a wider range of sizes.
Both covers are UV-treated with a 12mm bubble diameter and are factory pre-welded as a rectangular cover. If your pool isn’t rectangular, the cover can be trimmed on-site to match your pool’s exact shape.
